The Red Skull rescues Dekker, and tortures him for his failure.  He then disposes of him, and he’s found by fishermen.

Capt. Savage’s team gets into a bar fight in Australia with Rolfe Harrison, and are approached by the local Military Police.  Capt. Savage arrives and smoothes things over, then informs Harrison that he’ll be joining the squad.  The team is soon briefed on their mission: stop Herbert Cholmondeley from working in cooperation with the Japanese government in producing counterfeit Australian currency and flooding the market.  Harrison was chosen because of his background in engraving.

Capt. Sawyer gives Fury his mission: He and the Howling Commandos are to rescue the captured Jim Morita.  They parachute into Germany near prison Camp 13, put up a fight and surrender to get inside.  They meet the other prisoners and discover that an informer is telling the guards when breakouts will happen, and suspect Captain Tim Corbett.  Sgt. Fury is soon put into solitary confinement for mouthing off to the commandant.

The Howlers have been tunneling under the prison walls, making the informer think they’ll attempt a breakout.  Instead, they’ve rescued Fury from solitary.  Elsewhere, Hitler is informed of the Howling Commandos captivity, and sends for them to be brought to Berlin for execution.  With the guards positioned in the wrong place from the false information, the prisoners break out easily, and discover the real informer when he refuses to drink from Gabe’s canteen.  Capt. Corbett shoots him and apologies are made.  Elsewhere, Hitler informs the commandant that he will be executed instead of the Howlers, for letting them escape.

Upset over the inability to defeat the Howling Commandos, Hitler rants to Hermann Goering and Joseph Goebbels.  Goering has a solution; send the Agent of 1,000 Faces after them.  After Hitler voices some skepticism, ‘Goebbels’ reveals that he is the Agent of 1,000 Faces, surprising him.  Later, Bull McGiveney tells Dino that Sawyer is looking for him, who then tells Dino he will be escorting actor John Barrywell around town.  He does, but Barrywell is the Agent of 1,000 Faces and captures Dino.

The Agent of 1,000 Faces, posing as Mr. Pierce of the OSS, tells Sawyer that Dino has been captured and they should relocate the base, it’s security has been compromised.  Instead, Sawyer sends the Howlers to rescue Dino and capture the Agent, who has the compromising information.  They go to Denmark and fall into a trap, but reveal Pierce as the Agent, defeat him, and rescue Dino.

The USS Sea Wolf arrives near Burma, and the Leatherneck Raiders begin their mission after taking care of some patrolmen.  As they dig towards the prison camp, Cohen and some others are digging towards them.  They meet in the tunnel and Izzy explains that it was he who contacted Australia with a radio he scavenged.  As the group attacks the prison camp from within a platoon of marines attack from outside, and the camp is quickly taken.

Flint then gives Fury his mission: rescue Sawyer.  The Howlers make their way to Germany while Sawyer frees himself and finds Axis maps and plans.  The Howlers eventually find him and they all get out of there.

Savage and his squad continue their training, the camp is attacked by Japanese troops.  They return to the camp base where they’re ordered to hold the camp until Allied command can launch a diversionary invasion to draw the Japanese away from the training camp.  That night they fight Japanese troops and drive them off.  It’s revealed that this was just a diversion while the Japanese attacked elsewhere, and the camp is now safe.

Both teams are aboard the USS Sea Wolf and begin their assignment in Japan.  After meeting some resistance, they make their way to the castle that the scientist is being held at.  However, they’re ambushed by Japanese troops and Lee Baker is killed.

Captain Savage and the Raiders mourn Lee Baker, and then the two squads continue their mission.  They storm the castle and quickly find Dr. Terry Reiker, atomic scientist.  However, she believes that the Japanese are peaceful and the Americans aren’t, so she’s defected willingly, and wasn’t captured after all.  However, they have their orders and plan to take her back to Allied territory anyway.  On their way out she calls for help and brings more Japanese soldiers.  When she asks them to help her, the Colonel explains that she’s done all the work they need, and they plan to use her research to build an atomic bomb to defeat their enemies.  She then willingly escapes with Fury, and they quickly meet up with the others.

Captain Savage and his team attend Lee Baker’s funeral.  Shortly afterwards, they’re sent out in the Sea Wolf to scout for enemy ships.  They’re discovered and attacked, and Savage is knocked unconscious.  Capt. Griggs surrenders the ship and everyone is taken prisoner.  When Savage wakes in the prison camp, they team up with an American priest and escape.

New Avengers: AAFES #3 pg6-pg20

A time-traveling Spider-Man appears through a portal and finds the Astonishing X-Men along with Captain America, Iron Man, Cage, and many WWII soldiers fighting robots that are reminiscent of Kang, who’s in his sword ship above the battle field.

Iron Man explains to Spider-Man that Kang mind controlled the X-Men and sent them to fight the New Avengers. The New Avengers freed the X-Men and defeated Kang, but he got away. Using equipment he left behind they accessed his ship found out his new plan and using the technology moved to intercept him. His plan was to kill Captain America in the past. Both teams proceeded to the past and found the WWII Cap first and he is safely hidden.

The New Avengers left the portal open in the hopes of Sentry coming to their aid and both teams are trying to defend soldiers and defeat Kang without altering the timeline. As they fight they are reinforced by Nick Fury and his Howling Commandoes. All the groups press forward their attack, but the battle stops when Kang appears to have the WWII Cap. Spider-Woman appears on the scene and apologizes for letting him get away from her.

WWII Cap does not want to see good men get killed for one man and makes Kang an offer. He wants Kang to take him out of the time line and show him the future where he does not exist and see if it makes a difference. If it does he will let Kang kill him, if not Kang must return him and let him go. Kang agrees. WWII Cap tells the others to trust him and he and Kang depart while the others wait pondering what will happen.

Moments later, a battle ravaged Kang and WWII Cap return. Kang releases him as promised. The modern Cap takes out Kang and the New Avengers take him into custody. WWII Cap explains that a group of Avengers in the future, every bit as good as this group defeated him even without Cap, because no group is about just one person but the group itself. The New Avengers and X-Men then return to the future.

Fury & his Howling Commandos parachute outside Eisendorf to meet some German resistance fighters, and to find out what the Red Skull is up to.  They encounter some Nazis and defeat them, but Bucky is injured.  Cap gets him to their contact, who’s father is a doctor, and the Howlers start their recon on the Skull.  Bucky will be fine but needs rest, so cap is filled in on what’s happening.

Cap regroups with the Howlers and they come up with a plan. That night, Bucky & Gretchen go to the library to look into the history of the castle, while Cap & Fury go to the Nazi command post to find out what they’re looking for.  They regroup and prepare their attack.

Fury & his Howling Commandos create a diversion while Cap goes after the Skull, and while Bucky & Gretchen rescue Dexx.  Cap finds the Skull as a giant Sleeper robot activates.  He destroys it, the Red Skull grabs the schematics and escapes, and the explosion destroys the castle.  Cap digs himself out and regroups with the Howlers.  After dawn, Bucky says goodbye to Gretchen and the group leaves for the extraction point.

Hitler gives a speech as he prepares to publicly execute Sgt. Fury.  Meanwhile in England, Capt. Sawyer sends for the Howling Commandos.  They’re being sent to the States to train American troops.  Back in Berlin, Sgt. Fury’s execution is about to take place when Allied planes strafe the place.  Fury escapes in the confusion, but he’s injured.  A woman with the German resistance, Coral Liebowitz, helps him get by Nazi troops searching for him, and they go to her place.  Later, the Howlers arrive in the United States and are greeted by President Roosevelt.  That night, Coral attempts to get Fury a uniform, but they’re ambushed by Koenig.  After a fight Fury and Coral escape, but Fury swears vengeance against Koenig.
